Research Parkway Betterments and Twin Arches

The Twin Arches is our first step towards creating an iconic gateway to our community.

The Salem Creek Connector project creates a major new interchange at US 52 and anew road—Research Parkway—leading to the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter. This project was “fast-tracked” because it will be critical to moving traffic in and out of Downtown Winston-Salem when Business 40 closes for construction. This corridor features multiple enhancements and betterments prescribed in the Creative Corridors Coalition Visionary Master Plan and Design Guidelines.

In addition to agreeing upon and negotiating many betterments for the roadway project, Creative Corridors Coalition commissioned world-renowned bridge architect Donald MacDonald to design non-structural arches for this major interchange. MacDonald’s design—now referred to as the Twin Arches—takes visual cues from the frequently found arches in our Moravian communities as well as the domed building, currently called the Wells Fargo Center, designed by renowned architect César Pelli.
